Messages and Values Coursework Assignment XP

Due date is first Monday back - no excuses if you want the opportunity to redraft.

Compare the representation of women in Chinese Culture in 'Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon' (Dir. Ang Lee 1999) and Mulan (Dir. Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook 1998)
at least 1500 words

To get maximum marks you need to:

Compare and contrast both films at the same time all the way through i.e. for each point you should provide evidence from both films

You must demonstrate an excellent knowledge and understanding of both films

You must make detailed reference to specific scenes and technical aspects as well both films narrative and genre

Show you understand the concept of representation and the messages and values communicated by the film

Analyse rather than describe

Use technical terms and the correct terminology

General essay writing points:

Your introuction should be a short answer to the question - in a nutshell how are women represented in the films (similarities and differences) and what is the directors' preferred reading?

Each paragraph should make a point about a) how they are represented b) the evidence to support your statement c) an analysis of messages and values/directors preferred reading i.e. what does this representation communicate the audience about women? Does it challenge/confirm stereotypes?

Try to vary your sentence structure and paragraph openers

Your conclusion should refer back to your introduction it's like saying 'there I told you so' because you have provided evidence to support your opening statement.
